Knife advice anyone?

My knives have been breaking one by one, and I'm down to just a few. I was saving up for a Kitchen Aid mixer, but I'm afraid that my savings are going to have to go towards new knives. The block set I have now was a wedding gift- the Farberware brand - and the problem I've had is that they break where the blade and handle meet. I want to get something that will last me a while (more than 5 years), but I'm not sure what brand or what to look for to get a good quality set. Any ideas?

I just got some Cuisinart Santoku knives for Christmas and I love them! But those are specific for certain tasks, so you'll need other kinds as well. But I would definitely get at least 1 large one (chef's knife) (there are other brands that make them as well--Santoku is the type, not the brand--it has the little round dents in the blade). Just make sure you look for knives that have the blade all the way through the handle, preventing them from breaking. I would also go for a set that has a sharpener included! Hope this helps!

Nina,
When i was registering for my wedding I went by William & Sonoma(sp?) and they spent about 20 minutes explaining about all of the different types of knives, what to look for, etc. I didn't buy anything from them but they gave some great information (plus they usually have some great samples). It might help you make a decision. Good luck..happy knife hunting.

Rick & I are soon to celebrate our 20 year wedding anniversary! My basic set of five knives, a sharpener & block is by Chicago Cutlery and the handles started to shrink and fall off the blades only a few years ago (if they hadn't been washed in the dishwasher repeatedly they would probably still be in decent shape now). The blades are still in good condition.

the reason the blades are breaking off is probably because they don't extend into the handle...this is a very important feature to look for.

reading this site as well as your Facebook page has been such an encouragement to me! always stay close to the Lord...
