My New Doctor

Ever just wonder why life can't be simple? It sure keeps things "interesting" around here!

Although I had the same OB for Emma and Elliot, they were born at separate hospitals and in different cities (Emma: Chesapeake General/ Elliot: Sentara Leigh, Norfolk). And for baby Ethan, we are keeping up with tradition and he will be born in yet a different hospital and city than his two older siblings: Obici, Suffolk.
Since we moved from VA Beach to Windsor only weeks before Elliot's arrival, we decided to stay with our OB in VA Beach and make the hour drive to the hospital (and boy, was Michael crossing his fingers that I wouldn't go into labor during rush hour!). Labor didn't start till around midnight, of course, and the roads were practically empty. But we decided to change OB's for this pregnancy to avoid the drives for appointments etc.

And that was the beginning of a simple change gone haywire.

Amongst a number of unfortunate events, I've come rather close to changing OB's here, but I keep holding out, hoping things would get better. Each time they have asked me the same questions over and over again- each one telling me that they would mark it in their records so I wouldn't be asked again.

My first visit, which lasted 3 hours, the midwife extensively looked over my records. But a few appointments later, they wanted to know why they didn't have my records yet. ??? And I had to fill out more paper work and wait for them to make phone calls...

Once I waited TWO HOURS before being seen. Mind you, I had Elliot with me for this visit and didn't plan for a morning long appointment, so no bottle handy. I finally opened the door to the room they had me waiting in- that was after Elliot had been screaming for 25 minutes or so. Something happened with my paperwork, "blah blah blah"...and when I was finally seen, it took the midwife atleast 5 minutes to find a heartbeat. (that really wasn't her fault. Ethan is a very squirmy kid. and that doppler has more cushioning on me this time to muddle through.)

Upon having some issues that needed attention, I called to speak to a nurse. TWO days later, I received a call back. That was after I had called 4 times on the second day of not receiving a call. And then the nurse was quite rude to me. Upon which I decided I would be better off hanging up rather than explaining my problems to her.

Well, this past week I had an almost normal, pleasant (as pleasant as these things could be) checkup.

Except, after telling my Doctor that we would be traveling to Indianapolis for my brother's wedding, she asked - in complete seriousness- "Now where is Indianapolis?!"

I'm really starting to wonder, folks. How in the world can you be smart enough to mess with all that medical stuff and not have a inkling of an idea where on earth Indianapolis is?

That's hilarious, Nina, especially since I live here. Maybe they didn't have to memorize states and capitals in med school. =) When are you coming out again?

Rachel

Wow! My husband will get a kick out of this story;). I hope that things get better from here on out;).

Cherith

Yikes! I think I'd be switching doctors!! Hope things go well for you :)

Yes, Nina, I would DEFINITELY be switching doctors! I can't believe they were making you wait those lengths of time at your appt to see the dr. I thought having an hour long appointment was bad! And having to wait on the nurse to return your call for 2 DAYS! My dr's always returned my calls within a few hours. I am concerned for you! I had to switch dr's for our third baby because my old drs quit delivering babies, and I was nervous about getting a good doctor, but it turned out that my new doctors were good and I was thankful for that. Hope things get better! :)

Allison

And on the "where is Indianapolis" question, how do you even respond to that? :) Is she foreign?

You really have to wonder. What in the world??? I really hope you can find someone there, or somewhere else, that seems to have completed elementary school :) ha!!

So, are you making the switch?? That's pretty amazing, I have to say!
Btw, we're also having a boy! :) I see you have a name picked out. Good! :) We're still working on ours...
